Can 3D Optical Imaging Guide and Improve Robotic Surgery?

Medical robotics are expected to play a key role in the future of surgical technologies by enable new advanced procedures and improve outcomes of established procedures. As more medical robotics are being used in a wide range of surgical applications, some of the limitations associated with robotic technologies are being revealed. Many of such limitations are associated with the lack of vision and sensing during the surgical robot manipulations. Thus, photonic technologies can play a major role in advancing medical robotics by providing critical imaging and sensing needs that can allow robots to see and sense target tissues, thus making the surgical robotics safer and more precise. In this talk, I will review some of the technologies include optical coherence tomography based sensors and imagers, and other 3D technologies being developed in our group for medical robotics and discuss their performances and future directions.
