Nanoaperture optical tweezers to study proteins and nanoparticles

Proteins are the nanoscale machines of life. We have developed a laser tweezer technique to isolate a single protein in solution, analyze its size (particularly useful in heterogeneous mixtures), observe its interactions (with small molecules, DNA, and proteins), and measure its mechanical motion in the 10 GHz to >1 THz range. In this talk, I will review our past work on this subject, and also studies of nanoparticles in general using this approach.
